Cup/Mug Coasters ~ Canning Lids and Screw Bands

I noticed that many of my canning screw bands needed replaced.  After so many years of canning, they started to rust and bend.  I decided to recycle some into cup coasters.

Items needed:

~screw band and lid, wide mouth
~spray paint of your choice
~ thin cork, This can be found in most craft stores by the roll, as well as in 4 inch rounds (which you will have to cut down to fit into the wide mouth canning band).  We used 1/8th inch thick crafting cork.
~ strong glue
~ scissors
~ pen or marker to trace lids
~ a sealer spray (matte or glossy)
optional:  rubber stamps and permanent ink

1. Wash and dry the canning bands and lids.  Spray paint the both sides of the bands, and the top side of the lid.  Allow to dry in between coats of paint.

Update:  Spray this with a few layers of sealer spray to prevent the paint from chipping off during use.  Allow the sealer to dry in between layers.

2. Trace a wide mouth lid onto the cork and cut it out with scissors.  If you want to stamp your cork, now is the time to do that too.

3.  Glue the lid into the band, allow to dry.

4.  Glue the cut piece of cork to the the bottom side of the lid.  Allow to dry.

There are so many fun stamps to use today, so have fun making these for gift giving, or using yourself.  You can also do this with large recycled lids from other jars.

I give my Aunt credit for this idea.  She loved roosters like I do.  Luckily, I had a rooster stamp.

I've made coasters before, but with a crocheted piece inserted vs. the cork.

These are really neat ideas Kristina.

Are you selling them.

Darlene, I just made enough for the house and porch this time. I hadn't thought of selling any of them.
